The Student Sustainability Committee (SSC) is a committee of the University of
Maryland's undergraduate Student Government Association (SGA). SSC advises
the SGA and University administration to ensure that environmental
sustainability remains a campus-wide focus.
SSC works on environmental issues on campus, in the community and even in
the state. Historically, we've worked on initiatives related to transportation,
water and energy use, food and resources consumption, development and
landscape planning, environmental education, and beyond. We're always
open to new initiatives, so if you've got an idea, we want to hear it!
We meet every Monday at 7pm in Terrapin Room B in Stamp. We'd absolutely
love to see you there!
2013-14 Initiatives:
-
Power Shift: We recruited 60 UMD students to attend a huge youth
environmental conference in Pittsburgh. At the conference we went to
trainings, workshops, rallies, and speeches to learn how to build a
stronger environmental community back at UMD!
-
Fossil Free MD: We started a statewide coalition urging the
University System of Maryland to stop investing in the fossil fuel industry.
-
Lowering UMD's Carbon Emissions: We urged President Loh to take greater action on reducing campus carbon emissions and to purchase more renewable electricity - and he listened!
-
Cove Point: We have worked closely with a local nonprofit, the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, to raise awareness about a proposal to build a dangerous energy facility in Southern MD. We hosted an event on campus attended by over 200, and we brought 40 students to the largest rally in MD's history!
***These are just a few of the many things we've worked on this year. Others include: expanding campus gardens, encouraging vegeterian eating in the diners, and getting more commuter students to carpool.***
