Learn More About Sustainability on Campus and Beyond...!

 

Sustainability is a broad term that we hear frequently, but what

does it really mean? Well, it means something different to each

individual, but the most commonly used definition is: 

 

 “Sustainable development is development

that meets the needs of the present without

compromising the ability of future generations

to meet their own needs."

 

Another way to look at sustainability is as a balance of

three main pillars of society: the environment, the economy,

and society. When a community protects the needs of all three

pillars, that is truly sustainable living.

Office of Sustainability: The Office of Sustainability was created in 2007 and is dedicated to furthering the sustainability of our campus.

 

Green Dining: From excellent recycling and composting facilities, to the recently opened Terp Farm, to our 2020 Real Food Goal, dining services is committed to being green.

 

Stamp Student U is Going Green: Stamp has taken on a number of great initiatives in recent years: a green roof, battery recycling, and food court composting!

 

Green Commuting: Many students commute every single day to campus, and DOTS is working to limit their environmental footprint.

Academic Programs: Beyond the Sustainability minor being the most popular minor on campus, UMD offers a multitude of sustainability majors. Its time to green your academics!

 

Sustainability Fund: Every year $300,000 is available to any student or faculty member to use for a project to enhance the sustainability

of our campus. Apply for a grant today!

 

Green Facilities: Facilities Management works hard to ensure that their work is as sustainable as possible - check it out! 

 

Reslife Sustainability: Its hard to live sustainably when you're in a dorm, but Reslife is doing its absolute best to help you out.
