Green Student Groups

UMD is ranked one of the most environmentally friendly campuses in the nation for a reason. Check out these incredible student-driven organizations for even more ways to get involved!

VegTerps was established with a mission of bringing together vegan, vegetarian, pescetarian and vegcurious students at University of Maryland. VegTerps also has a focus on animal rights, with an emphasis on advocacy and outreach work.

Promotes sustainable business values by introducing students to new and innovative ways in which businesses have adopted green practices, encouraging students to value environmental concerns, and advocating green measures at the university.

St. Mary’s Garden Club

Located on the east side of of St. Mary’s Language House, the St. Mary's Language House Garden Club provides gardening and horticultural experience to the staff, students, and University of Maryland community. You can email them at langgardenclub@gmail.com.

Sponsors various outdoor recreational activities, such as hiking, backpacking, camping, mountain biking, caving, canoeing, rock climbing, and kayaking. Meet other outdoor enthusiasts who share love for the outdoors.

 

Encourages proper recycling and waste management education and practice at the University of Maryland.

Rethink College Park

As a student-run online newspaper/blog dedicated to the smart growth of College Park, its mission is to help transform College Park into a great college town. It believes in full access to information, public dialogue, and the power of creative ideas.

Rooftop Community Garden

The Rooftop Community Garden embodies and inspires urban sustainability through hands on urban agriculture and food justice education. We seek to explore where our food comes and how to grow, preserve, prepare, and eat food in a way that is culturally appropriate and regenerative to our bioregion.

Sierra Club: UMD Chapter

An environmental advocacy group that promotes clean energy, clean water, outings and more in Maryland.

Smith Undergraduate Net Impact (SUNI)

Fosters a culture at the University of Maryland that demands positive social and environmental impact in the world. The organization is open to all undergraduate students on campus.

Co-op Housing University of Maryland

Provides quality, affordable, autonomous and community-centered housing through a non-for-profit, cooperative and democratic decision making structure.

 

Council on the Environment

Advises the University of Maryland on a variety of activities as related to the regional and global environment.

Engineers Without Borders

A student chapter of a national nonprofit organization (EWB-USA) that partners with developing communities to improve their quality of life through the implementation of environmentally sustainable, equitable, and economical engineering projects.

Environmental Finance Center

One of ten such University-based centers from across America, The Environmental Finance Center provides the University of Maryland community with the knowledge and resources to help maintain environmental health and quality of life.

Food Recovery Network

Unites students on college campuses to fight waste and feed people by donating the surplus unsold food from their colleges to hungry Americans.

Green Dining

Sustainability programs run by UMD’s dining services. Includes a huge variety of programs, including (among many others) reusable carryout, waste separation and composting, and green roofs.

JFarm

A Jewish group focused on gardening and food justice. Founded in 2009, it maintains a vegetable and herb garden in front of the Rosenbloom Hillel Center, much of the produce being donated locally, and educates Maryland students on food security issues.

 

Maryland Adventure Program (MAP)

MAP is committed to providing student-powered adventure experiences that promote personal growth, transformative learning, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship for the University of Maryland Community.

Maryland Food Collective (Co-op)

The Maryland Food Co-op serves vegan- and vegetarian-friendly sustainable food at fair prices. There are no bosses or managers, only people who are working for a space that maintains equality, a good atmosphere, and lots of music

Maryland PIRG

A consumer group that advocates against powerful interests when those interests’ actions conflict with the interests of society.

Maryland Sustainability Engineering

Maryland Sustainability Engineering is an organization dedicated to sustainable development locally and abroad.

Meatless Monday

Encourages students to adopt more sustainable and humane eating habits, through outreach and demonstration of the benefits of eating meat-free.

Office of Sustainability

The University of Maryland Office of Sustainability works to reduce the University’s environmental impact while maintaining and advancing its economic and social well-being.

 

Pollinaterps

A collective group of University of Maryland students, staff, faculty, local scientists and local community members working to build a bee friendly community through research, education, habitat creation and preservation.

American Indian Student Union

Raises awareness of American Indian cultures and of affairs impacting American Indian students and the community, including environmental issues.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Public Health Garden Club

Designs and maintains the garden located to the west of SPH in order to advance the public health needs and policies of our state and beyond through practical lessons on agriculture and sustainability.

Residence Hall Association Sustainability Committee

The committee is made up of student members of the RHA Senate and works on areas relating to sustainability around the campus.
