Remove our investments in coal, oil, and natural gas, and redirect them to clean energy portfolios.

Environmental Art Contest

We are now accepting entries for a visual arts contest about fossil fuel divestment!! By pressuring the University System of Maryland to "divest", we ask that they remove its $71 million invested in dirty energy sources like coal, oil and natural gas and redirect those funds into renewable energy companies. Art submissions must relate to divestment, "dirty money", or other ideas regarding our environment, energy, economics, power, or justice. All student submissions will be showcased at our Divestment event on October 27! Contest winners will receive a gift certificate to local College Park business.

Submission details:
Submissions of 2-D pieces may be emailed to umcpsgassc@gmail.com, either as an attachment or as a photo of the art piece. Please contact that email for details regarding submission of 3-D pieces.

UPDATE: University System of Maryland to divest from coal and tar sands within 5 years, no future direct investments in Carbon 200

On Friday, May 27, the Ad Hoc Committee for Socially Responsible Investing announced, after long-term consideration of our proposal for divestment from fossil fuels, the Foundation's private (indirect) investments in coal and tar sands will be gone within five years.

Further, the Foundation:

1. Will make no direct investments in the Carbon Underground 200 companies.

2. Will establish a position on the investment staff to seek out investments in renewable energy.

3. Will become a signatory to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment.

4. Will join the Intentional Endowments Network

5. Will renew its appeal to investment fund managers to consider the carbon footprints of the companies they invest in and to choose renewable energy over fossil fuel investments, all else being equal.

With this statement, the USM joins a network of universities across the nation and world that have decided to take responsibility for their role in shaping a future defined by climate justice, not climate chaos. With this news, we have helped create a foundation for the latter, and we will continue to work until our portfolio is fully fossil free.

This Note explores whether state and local legislation passed during the anti-apartheid divestment campaign can serve as a model for trustees of public pension funds to divest their holdings in fossil fuels consistent with their fiduciary duties of loyalty and prudence.

Come enjoy LIVE MUSIC and help us push for DIVESTMENT from fossil fuels at UMD!!! Let's transition from aspiration to action in an exciting, music-filled extravaganza.

Right now, the University System of Maryland invests $50 to 70 million in dirty energy companies (coal, oil, and natural gas). We are profitting off the industry MOST responsible for climate change, the worst effects of which will disproportionately affect low income, minority communities. Divestment (de-investing our endowment from the fossil fuel industry) is about fighting for SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE!
